Two large tropical islands (Bathurst and Melville) 80 kilometres north of Darwin that are home to the Tiwi people, one of the most distinct Aboriginal cultures in Australia. The Tiwi are famous for their vivid dot-pattern paintings, carved pukumani burial poles, and for producing many of the AFL's most celebrated Indigenous players.
The Tiwi Islands are two large islands (Bathurst and Melville) plus nine smaller islands in the Arafura Sea. They are 100 percent Aboriginal freehold land and have been home to the Tiwi people for at least 7,000 years. The islands were isolated from the mainland by rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age, which is why the Tiwi language and culture developed separately from the Yolŋu and Arnhem Land groups.
Tiwi art is distinct for its geometric designs and earth-pigment palette. The Ngaruwanajirri, Tiwi Design and Munupi Arts art centres are active today and visits form the heart of most cultural tours. Pukumani poles, the large carved funeral posts erected six months after a death, are the most recognisable form of Tiwi art and are held in major collections around the world.
Most visitors come on a day tour from Darwin (90 minute ferry or 20 minute flight), visiting an art centre, the Patakijiyali Museum at Wurrumiyanga, a traditional welcome smoking ceremony, and lunch with Tiwi women. The Tiwi Islands Football League, with its grand final in March at Wurrumiyanga, is one of the biggest events of the year and welcomes visitors.
