Mount Buffalo National Park is a 31,000-hectare alpine plateau rising 35 kilometres from Bright, and one of Victoria's most spectacular natural environments. The Gorge is its most iconic site, a dramatic amphitheatre of 200-metre granite cliffs at 1,385 metres elevation, commanding sweeping views across the Ovens Valley and surrounding alpine peaks. The park is free to enter year-round and offers more than 90 kilometres of walking tracks.
The Gorge Day Visitor Area is the natural starting point for first-time visitors. Perched on sheer cliffs above the valley, it is home to the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet and is the trailhead for the Gorge Heritage Walk, which passes Crystal Brook Falls and reveals the dramatic granite landscape that defines the plateau. The park's highest point, The Horn at 1,723 metres, rewards those who make the summit with 360-degree alpine panoramas.
Mount Buffalo protects hundreds of native plant species, including the Buffalo Sallee eucalyptus found nowhere else on earth. Wildlife includes wombats, lyrebirds, and the alpine silver xenica butterfly, which is endemic to this plateau. Lake Catani offers summer swimming and camping, while winter brings snow activities at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley.
The sealed Mount Buffalo Road begins at Porepunkah and climbs the full length of the plateau. Snow chains are mandatory for all vehicles during winter months. Dogs are not permitted in the park at any time.
