Middleton Beach is Albany's most popular swimming beach, a crescent of white sand sheltered by King George Sound about four kilometres east of the city centre. The calm, protected waters make it ideal for families, while the surrounding precinct offers cafes, playgrounds, and easy walking trails with views across to the granite islands of Michaelmas and Breaksea.
The beach is home to the Southern Ocean Surf Reef, an artificial reef constructed from some 70,000 tonnes of granite that creates rideable waves for surfers while helping to protect the shoreline. A shark barrier installed in 2016 provides additional peace of mind for swimmers. From May to October, humpback and southern right whales can often be spotted migrating along the coast directly from the beach.
The Ellen Cove Boardwalk links Middleton Beach to Emu Point along 8.4 kilometres of shared path with continuous views over King George Sound. The walk is suitable for all fitness levels and is one of the most scenic coastal strolls in the Great Southern region. The beach is also the Noongar place known as Binalup, meaning place of first light, reflecting how sunrise spills across the water here.
